Labour Of Love Jer 3:15
Labour Of Love Jer 3:15

This may not look like anything really remarkable, but travel back approximately 30 years with me to get an amazing view of human resilience. Now, picture yourself, in a wheel chair, and being 50 yrs old, and having muscular distrophy to the point where you can only move from your neck to the top of your head, and your hands down to your writs. And then make this vase and put it in a kiln to harden it and make it look like this. It took my friend three months to make this for me. She worked REALLY hard to do this, and yes, if one was to look, there are “flaws” in it, but it is still the perfect ceramic vase. I have kept it all these years just to reflect upon such a marvellous example of resilience, and love in action.

Why did Millie make this for me? All I did was to be a volunteer, and sit with her every week to visit and talk. Folks, we all need a little of this kind of resilience for this trying time of covid and other maladies. Please, find someone to visit and care about, and lets get through this thing together.

Visits might have to be on zoom or by phone, but we can still reach out to someone today.

These are continual sacrifices which God requires, and which will spring from a sense of God’s love in Christ Jesus. Praise to God for his unspeakable gift, and acts of kindness to people for God’s sake. No reliance, even on the infinitely meritorious sacrifice of Christ, can be acceptable in the sight of God if a person has not not love and kindness towards their neighbour.

Praise, prayer, and thanksgiving to God, with works of unfeigned love (1 Pet 1:22) and mercy to everyone God puts in our path are the sacrifices which every genuine follower of Christ must offer: and they are the “many infallible proofs” (Acts 1:3) that a person belongs to Christ; and ANYONE, including Church leaders who do not bear these fruits gives full evidence, whatever their preferred creed may be, that they certainly are no Christian. It was Christ Himself who said

“ye shall know them by their fruits.” (Mat 7:16, Mat 7:20)

Our Church Leaders who are so busy judging people, are far too busy judging to love the people and meet them where they are at, at the point of their felt and expressed needs; as Jesus would always do. They seem bent on a harvest of vegetables, instead of the fruit that Jesus talked about and showed us by examples. And when questioned about it, they will dismiss the whole thing with an adhominem diatribe on “the Mat 18 method,” and strut away satisfied to preach it to an ever-shrinking church which people cannot stand to attend anymore. I have had half a dozen people this week ask me to say something about this, and I am sure many can tell us about such churches and their “leaders.”

Conversely, I was recently, quite critical of a church leader on the internet, but God showed me I was wrong, , because I found out that his own daughter and son in law were praying for me and my wife who was dying of cancer, and they did that for us for 4 years.  I wrote him a letter to apologize and to ask him to forgive me. I want to follow Jesus in these trying times – otherwise I doubt Ill be able to stay sane. So, no, this is not an anti-church leadership post. It is a post about God’s people, and how God has promised “Pastors after mine own heart.” (Jer 3:15). There are also many church leaders who follow after the Jer 3:15 principle. It was one of those Jer 3:15 Pastors that taught me about personal ministry to the sick and the suffering.

The design of Christ in giving himself for us is that he may purchase to himself (with His blood) a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Scripture shows us that the apostle Paul, and Jesus, and others, calls the believing ones to the performance of many excellent duties, in which it becomes Christians to excel.

I  might be the only one crying right now about this post, but its because I reminded myself of the day my friend Millie died, and a nurse helped her to call me so that she could say good bye and so that I could pray for her. She was thousands of miles away, and it was a real tear-jerker for sure, but in a good way. I was somebody’s angel. (Heb 13:2). Praise The Lord. Millie, IMO was one of God’s people. Inspite of all her limitations, many were converted to Jesus Christ because of her faith and actions for Him. She was one of the best “Pastors” or “Church Leaders” I have ever had the pleasure and blessings of working with.

None are so vile, none have fallen so low, as to be beyond the working of this power. In all who will submit themselves to the Holy Spirit a new principle of life is to be implanted; the lost image of God is to be restored in humanity. {COL 96.1}
